“The Aligarh
movement addressed the problems Indian Muslims faced as a "backward
minority" within the Raj. The Mohamedan
Anglo-Oriental College
at Aligarh ,
with its European—essentially British—faculty provided the impetus of the
movement. This study reviews the role and influence of the European faculty at
the College and assesses its contribution to the evolution of the Aligarh movement.
European influence on the movement and the college reached its peak between
1886 and 1906, with the years 1906 to 1919 witnessing a transition period and
the passing of European dominance.” The
